THE LAST REMAINING DAYS IN INDONESIA (THE SADDEST PART) August 27-31, 2018             On our last Friday in Bandung, we chose to spend it in Bandung zoo, I was able to see animals which can’t be found in the Philippines haha. It was fun, thoughF                                                                                                                                             ↭   Aug. 29 It’s our last Saturday here in Indonesia, and in two days will be our departure. We visited every school we shared memories with. We had a farewell party at FKIP UNPAS together with the faculty. At first we had a cultural exchange wherein we showed our traditional costumes and our traditional dances.   And then we did a little dancing and singing jus to enjoy ourselves from the sad moment. The teachers sang us a farewell song, too. Looking back in our one month stay in Indonesia, I couldn’t be more thankful with the Lord for the wonderful experience. Though th

FINAL TEACHING DEMO: Passed or Failed?

WEEK 4: FINAL TEACHING DEMO: Passed or Failed? This week was the evaluation week. I did my final teaching demo in Grade 8 Class G, I was observed by the school supervisor Dr. Ebrahim Yusuf and a coordinator Miss Novi. Since we were given the chance to choose our own topic, I chose “Physical Activity and it’s forms”. I taught the kids the value of being physically fit because people often neglect the essence of physical activity in our lives. I wanted them to realize that Physical Education is not just a minor issue in us but it plays a major role in all the aspects in our lives and has a major impact especially in our health. Without these movements, we wouldn’t be able to perform our daily routine healthily. I showed them pictures of obese people and in every slides I let them read the English definition and its’ Indonesian translation. I also used the technologies available to implement 21st century teaching (speakers, lcd projector). The students participated well and the

For two days we were free in foods and accommodation, they also accompanied us to the center of Purwa to watch ASIAN GAMES! We were lucky enough to witness the cycling competition held in Purwakarta, can’t help but scream and cheer for my beloved Philippines! We were also interviewed by an Indonesian TV Journalist about our opinion towards ASIAN Games.  The Foods! Everything was for free! God bless you, Iiklima and Family! WEEK 3 TEACHING DEMONSTRATION WEEK MONDAY and TUESDAY August 20-21, 2018 My Grade 8G Sports Family It was just the same routine for two days. I managed teaching 3 Grade 8 sections with 1 hour time per meeting on Monday and Tuesday. My topic was still about the basic skills of basketball, (e.g, dribbling, passing, shooting, etc.) And I used my technique which was the translation of my dialogue. My classroom routine also starts inside the classroom for the discussion and then I let them change their clothes to PE uniforms for the application and performance task outside the field. Here are some of the photos during my class discussions.

Learning the Traditional Music Instrument of Indonesia

Image
Aug. 18 LEARNING THE TRADITIONAL MUSIC INTRUMENT OF INDONESIA It’s cultural visit day; my favorite day! This time, we went to Angklung saung Udjo. We watched the famous puppet of Indonesia named WAYANG GOLEK. The Wayang Golek puppet show is composed of puppets with different characteristics and facial expressions, Gamelan ensemble (the traditional music instruments) which serves as the background music for the puppet’s dramatic play, and of course, the puppet masters; Kudos to the puppet masters behind the entertaining puppet show! They were so professional in controlling the puppets. Puppets MASK DANCE (This was a bit shocking for us because we didn't expect that she would reveal a wayang mask, we thought that she was just covering her face with a hankerchief but when she threw the cloth and revealed the face of WAYANG, we were amazed.) Then there was a group of kids who presented a song and each of them has an angklung (another traditional music inst

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY INDONESIA!

How to teach Indonesian students like a pro

Image
Aug. 16 – HOW TO TEACH INDONESIAN STUDENTS LIKE A PRO           The title may seem bragging but I’m not a pro, either.   I just want to share how happy I was today because I successfully did my job as a student teacher. Gladly, I was able to finish my class without someone translating the words to me. Actually this isn’t really much of a news but you want to know what I did? Well, I wrote my classroom dialogue on a paper and translated the english words into Indonesian terms. But not really the whole dialogue though, just the major words. Although I may sometimes glance at the paper during the discussion, but that’s just a few times when I tend to forget the terms I practiced. I feel proud whenever I speak their language fluently because the students would follow my instructions without hesitations (being a Bisaya-Filipina is an advantage too because a lot of Indonesian words are similar with Bisaya, plus the accent). Also in my powerpoint presentation, in every slide, the

The Struggles of a Foreign Student Teacher

Image
Aug. 15 –  THE STRUGGLES OF A FOREIGN STUDENT TEACHER           The time has come for me to take over the class. My topic was about the basic fundamental skills in Basketball. The class I was assigned to teach was in Grade 8G. About 85% of the students in the class couldn’t speak English and could only even understand a bit, while some really do not understand English.            In teaching Physical education, I am confident about bringing up the topic through physical actions, gestures and body language, especially in a school where English isn’t the medium of instruction. However, I couldn’t really fully depend with just gestures in teaching because we also need to wake their cognitive and affective aspect. Explaining to them the values of the lesson and communicating to them was very hard. But during my discussion, some of the English terms were familiar to them since some of it are close to their native terms. And even though I had my cooperating teacher with me to

LESSON PLAN MAKING

Image
Aug. 14 – LESSON PLAN MAKING On this day, I was still an assistant to Mr. Cece’s class because he hasn’t given me yet a topic to teach. After the class, he gave me his lesson plan. I need to continue his lesson, but I was a bit worried because his lesson plan was written in Indonesian language. To solve the problem, I downloaded an app called text scanner app and Indonesian-English translator app. The lesson plan was very thick because it was for 3 meetings. First, I took a photo of what’s written on the hardcopy using the text scanner app, then the text written on the hard copy immediately transferred to the phone as a soft copy, and so I directly copy-pasted it to the translator app and did a bit of corrections. I was able to create a lesson plan in English text following the Indonesian format.
